Always give 100% to your audience. How are YOU doing?
Not only for musicians such as singers and wind instruments, but also for other musicians, healthy breathing and a better resistance to stress are great benefits in practicing the profession. This does not work on the singing or blowing technique in itself, but on the surrounding conditions, which enable an optimal performance.
The Ademwijzer technique also yields a lot of energy for artists and reduces the fight-flight response of the body, making you feel less stressed. This is because Relax Breathing techniques (based on Buteyko combined with relaxation techniques) increases the oxygen uptake in the body (your body recovers faster) and brings the hormone balance back to rest. In addition, there is less carbon dioxide loss because people learn to breathe through the nose while speaking, this means more oxygen is released into the body and you become tired less quickly.
Better oxygen delivery to the tissue by breathing less!
It is a common misconception that deep or heavy breathing would give you more oxygen. The red blood cells (which transport the oxygen throughout the body) are almost always more than 95% saturated with oxygen, regardless of how much you breathe.
The question is therefore not whether enough oxygen enters, but whether the oxygen is also delivered sufficiently to the tissues in the body that need oxygen. The carbon dioxide content in the blood is important here. If the carbon dioxide content is high, sufficient oxygen will be released, if the carbon dioxide content is too low, insufficient oxygen will be released. This mechanism is better known in medical science as the Bohr effect.
Greater stress resistance
Healthy tension is not bad. But one of the consequences of unhealthy breathing is that the whole body, including the brain, gets too little oxygen. By persistently breathing too much (which 90% of people now do!), The body eventually switches to combustion without oxygen. This is called lactic acid burn. As a result, you will suffer from, for example, loss of concentration, muscle cramps and fatigue. Lack of oxygen in the brain also provokes unpleasant thoughts and tension.
Experiencing nervousness and tension time and again when having to deliver a performance can cost a lot of energy and acquire a self-evoking character. People can feel very tense before a concert or performance and extra tired after a concert. It is unfortunate and unnecessary if medication has to be taken to suppress this nervousness and possible performance anxiety.
One of the first results after the RelaxBreathing is that people fall asleep better (no superfluous luxury after a performance) and get up more rested.
After using the Buteyko technique for a few months (some of the exercises can be done on the bus, in the car, while waiting, etc.), most people notice a clear difference in how they feel. You feel clearer, have more energy, and are generally more relaxed.
The fact that health improves in the long term because the immune system and the hormone balance can recover with healthy breathing (and you are less likely to catch a cold and become ill) is of course a bonus.
Are you a musician, artist or performer? And do you want to deal with stress better with regard to performing? Do you want to suffer less from energy loss? Please contact us for free advice about the possibilities that an RelaxBreathing could mean for you.
Experiences of artists who learned RelaxBreathing
Violinist of a famous Dutch orchestra
‘The many travels with the orchestra took a great toll, but the Breath Guide Training has brought me back to the vitality I had years ago. Very nice!’
Musician of a rock band
‘Making music is my passion and my life, but at one point I ran out. I am now back on track and feeling better than ever!’
Inge is a singer and teaches upcoming singers as a singing teacher. She slept badly and sometimes felt she was breathing too restlessly. She called this hyperventilation attacks herself. Buteyko has improved her condition, she sleeps better and she can exercise without getting tired. She can now breathe completely through the nose while running.
What I found very interesting was hearing from her how she had integrated the Buteyko breathing into her profession as a singer and singing teacher. While singing she can now relax more and the singing feels more like a flow that bubbles up in her and in which she can go along without having to work so hard and so that a beautiful result is created.
Marijke suffered from fatigue, being fast and sick a lot and inflammation that was difficult for her to get rid of. When she discovered how bad her breath was, she signed up for RelaxBreathing. Like more clients who sing in a choir, Marijke also asked concerned whether she should give up singing in the future in order to stay healthy. We reassured her that Relax Breathing would help her improve her breathing condition and build up more energy throughout the day so she would be calm in the choir.
